Check a moving company’s FMCSA record
Interstate movers and moving brokers must be registered with FMCSA, the federal agency that regulates interstate household-goods moves. Look a company up by its USDOT number, its MC number, or its name.
What the record can tell you
Whether the company holds carrier authority, broker authority, or both; whether household-goods authority appears in the federal record; and whether liability-insurance and bond filings are on record. Those are the facts worth confirming before you rely on what a company says about itself — a broker arranges a move that a different company performs, and which one you are dealing with changes who is responsible for what.
What it cannot tell you
A federal record is not a recommendation, a safety rating, or a statement that a company is legitimate — and a gap in the public data is not proof of wrongdoing.
